How the AI visibility checker works

More buyers now start with an AI assistant instead of a search engine. They type something like “What are the best tools for collecting customer feedback in stores?” and get a short answer that names three or four companies. If you’re not one of them, you never make the shortlist, and no analytics tool will tell you it happened.

1. We read your homepage

To understand what you sell and who you sell to, then write three questions a real customer in your category would ask, without naming any company.

2. We ask AI, with web search

Each question goes to OpenAI’s models, the family behind ChatGPT, with web search on, so the answer reflects what AI finds today.

3. We count who gets named

You see your AI visibility score, which competitors were recommended instead, and the sources AI cited for each answer.

What your AI visibility score means

Your AI visibility score is simply how many answers named you. Named in 3 of 3 answers means AI reliably puts you on the shortlist. Named in 1 of 3 means you appear for some needs but not others. Named in none means buyers asking AI in your category are being sent elsewhere.

The score matters most next to your competitors’. Being named in 1 of 3 answers is a fine start in a crowded category, and a problem if a rival is named in all three. That’s why the checker lets you add up to three competitors and scores them on exactly the same questions.

ChatGPT visibility vs. Google rankings

AI search visibility and Google rankings overlap, but they aren’t the same. AI assistants with web search read pages that rank well, and they also lean on review sites, comparison articles, forums and directories. A company with average rankings but strong mentions across those sources can be recommended more often than a company that ranks first. Checking your AI visibility directly is the only way to know.

How to improve your AI search visibility

Once you know which questions you’re missing from, the sources in each answer show where to work:

  • Be on the pages AI cites. If an answer leans on a “best tools for…” article or a review site, getting listed there helps more than another blog post on your own site.
  • Say plainly what you do and for whom. AI matches products to needs. A homepage that clearly states your category, your customers and your strengths is easier to recommend.
  • Publish comparison and use-case pages. Honest “X vs Y” and “best for…” pages give AI the context to place you correctly.
  • Keep checking. AI answers shift week to week. Tracking the same questions over time is how you see whether your work is paying off.

AI visibility checker FAQ

Is the AI visibility checker really free?

Yes. One check covers three customer questions and costs nothing. We email you a link to your results. Weekly tracking with five questions is part of CompetitorTrack’s paid plan.

Which AI does it check?

It asks OpenAI’s models, the same family behind ChatGPT, with web search turned on, so answers reflect what AI finds on the web today rather than only its training data.

What is an AI visibility score?

It’s how many of the answers named your company. If AI named you in 2 of 3 answers, your score is 2 of 3. We show the same count for each competitor you add, so you can see who AI prefers.

How is this different from other free AI visibility checkers?

Most checkers score your own brand on its own. This one asks the questions your customers ask and shows you next to your competitors, because the real question is whether AI recommends them instead of you.

Why do the results change between checks?

AI answers vary from one request to the next and change as the web changes. One check is a snapshot; tracking the same questions every week shows the trend.

Track your AI visibility every week

CompetitorTrack checks five customer questions weekly and shows who AI recommends, alongside your competitors’ pricing changes, emails, new pages and hiring.
