What happened to MailCharts?

Short version: Validity bought it, folded it into Litmus Enterprise, and retired the self-serve plans. Here's the timeline, what it means if you were a subscriber, and what the realistic options are.

The timeline

April 2025 — Validity acquires Litmus, the email testing and rendering platform.

Late 2025 — MailCharts joins the same group and is folded into the Litmus Enterprise suite.

Into 2026 — Self-serve access is retired. The individual and team plans, previously in the $49 to $149 a month range, are no longer sold. Access now runs through Litmus Enterprise contracts.

Litmus itself went through a related repricing in the same period, which is why you may have seen two separate rounds of complaint from email people who use both.

What it means in practice

If you were an enterprise customer, very little changed and you likely gained a tighter integration with the rest of the Litmus suite.

If you were one of the solo marketers, consultants, agencies or small ecommerce teams on a self-serve plan, the tool you used is still being built — it's just priced for a different buyer now. That's not a bait and switch, it's a strategy shift, but the effect on your workflow is the same.

Why this was predictable, and what to take from it

Competitive intelligence is a natural upsell into an enterprise email stack. Self-serve competitive tools are hard to run profitably at $49 a month because the underlying cost — capturing, storing and indexing email at scale — doesn't fall much when the customer is small. Consolidation into enterprise suites is the usual end of that story.

The practical lesson for anyone rebuilding their stack: your competitor archive is the asset, and it should ideally be yours. When MailCharts moved upmarket, subscribers didn't just lose access to a product. They lost access to the history they'd been reading, because the archive lived in the index rather than in their account.

What people are moving to

The replacements split into two groups, and the split matters more than the pricing:

  • Curated archives — Milled (free) and Panoramata. Someone else picks the brands and captures them continuously, so history is there on day one. Excellent for browsing and benchmarking; no help at all if the company you need isn't in the index.
  • Tracking address tools — Owletter, SendView, Newsletrix, Reyo, and ours. You get an address, subscribe it to whoever you like, and own the resulting archive. Unlimited coverage, but it starts empty.

We've written a longer, tool-by-tool breakdown with prices and an honest read on who each one suits: MailCharts alternatives after the Litmus move, and a wider view of the category in our tool comparison.

If you take one action

Start capturing again sooner rather than later, with whichever tool you pick. Every tracking-address product begins your archive on the day you subscribe. The competitor campaigns going out between now and whenever you get around to it aren't recoverable by anyone, at any price.

Own the archive this time

Your tracking addresses, your chosen competitors, your history — not a roster someone else curates and can reprice.
